State employees from Chadron to Falls City, Omaha to Scottsbluff, and everywhere in between attended town hall meetings to share their ideas for our next contract, to learn more about the negotiations process, and to learn about NAPE’s “Join, Serve, Lead” campaign to fight for better wages and working conditions.
State employees universally agreed that there must be some kind of meaningful step or longevity pay increase so workers can move from the minimum to the maximum of their salary range. It is unacceptable that new employees make the same amount as veteran employees, and staffing shortages are created by a system that does not encourage a lifelong career in state service. Other frequently mentioned topics were losing unused earned sick leave, inability to donate sick leave for maternity/catastrophic illness, and mandatory overtime assignments. Many other topics were also mentioned and discussed.
Our staff is working to compile all of the ideas gathered at the town hall meetings, and you will receive a survey in January that asks you to prioritize items discussed at the town hall meetings. We ask you to take the survey and encourage your colleagues to do the same. Additionally, nominations to serve on the union’s bargaining conference and negotiations team will be accepted in February. Union members will elect their peers to the bargaining conference by mail in March. For more information on the nominations and elections process, click here.
In order to impact change, we are asking all state employees to participate in our “Join, Serve, Lead” campaign. If you are not a NAPE member, please join! Our strength is in our numbers, and we need you in order to have success at the bargaining table. If you are already a member, we are asking you to serve in some capacity. You can be a worksite point of contact, a member of our contract action team, or become a NAPE steward. More info will be coming soon. Finally, if you are already serving, we want you to be a leader. Consider running for election to the bargaining conference or negotiations team. We need you! Join, Serve, Lead!
