McCook Corrections Member Has Vacation Approved After Grievance Win

NAPE/AFSCME member Allison Roe is a Food Service Worker at the Work Ethic Camp in McCook. In December, the Food Service Supervisor at WEC told staff that all vacation requests for all holidays would be denied due to short staffing. The only problem with that claim is the department was fully staffed.

Under our union contract, vacation leave requests cannot be unreasonably denied. Allison contacted NAPE/AFSCME immediately for assistance. Our field staff promptly filed a grievance on Allison’s behalf. Through the grievance process, NAPE/AFSCME members are able to challenge an unreasonable vacation denial. As a union member, Allison received representation at no cost.

A NAPE/AFSCME Field Representative successfully argued that the vacation denial was unreasonable, and that Allison’s vacation request was approved.

It’s important to know that vacation time may not be unreasonably denied under our NAPE/AFSCME labor contract. If you or a colleague has had their vacation denied unreasonably, contact NAPE/AFSCME right away. There is a strict 15 day deadline to file a grievance, so don’t delay.
