Delegates Attend 46th Biennial Nebraska State AFL-CIO Constitutional Convention in Kearney

Thirteen NAPE/AFSCME members represented our union as delegates to the Nebraska State AFL-CIO’s 46th biennial constitutional convention in September. NAPE/AFSCME is the largest affiliated union of the affiliated locals and labor councils that make up the Nebraska State AFL-CIO. Collectively, the federation is made up of more than 21,000 union members throughout our state.

More than 120 delegates representing unions in the public, building trades, industrial/electrical, railroad, and service sectors convened in Kearney to conduct our federations most important business including amending the bylaws, electing a new President/Secretary-Treasurer, and electing representatives to the Nebraska State AFL-CIO Executive Board.

In addition to conducting business, delegates heard presentations from experts on workplace safety, labor law, membership rights, and from six state senators on pending legislation and the importance of union members being involved in the legislative and political process.

NAPE/AFSCME member and Nebraska State AFL-CIO President/Secretary-Treasurer Sue Martin was recognized for her ten years of service as President. Sue was recognized by the delegates with a special reception as she heads into a well deserved retirement this fall.

Delegates elected Mike Gage (IBEW 1920, North Platte) as our new President-Secretary/Treasurer. Mike took office on October 1. NAPE/AFSCME member Toni Bonsera (DHHS, La Vista) was elected as AFSCME representative on the State AFL-CIO Executive Board and delegates representing public employees elected Adam Schrunk (Lincoln Firefighter’s Union President) as our Public Sector Representative on the board.

The next AFL-CIO constitutional convention will be held in September 2027.
