NAPE/AFSCME member Megan Baker, a Social Services Worker in Kearney, stood up for her rights after her request to flex one hour of her time was unreasonably denied. Megan knew that this was a violation of her rights and she contacted us right away.
Megan said that flex time request denials are not uncommon and she has been in this situation before, but it’s often fixed before a grievance is filed.
“They weren’t budging this time,” she said. “And even though it was only an hour that I would’ve had to take, I figured I’d rather grieve it than take then vacation leave because I knew it was a contract violation.”
Megan said the process was easy and her representative was very communicative about how the grievance process would work. Ultimately, though, the vacation leave was not deducted from her paycheck.
“I’m glad it all got fixed in the end,” she said. “A lot of us are aware of the right to flex our schedule and I always encourage people to stand up for themselves when their requests are unreasonably denied. That’s what our union and our contract are there for.”
Megan did the right thing by contacting us right away. If you feel your leave request has been unreasonably denied, contact your union representative right away. Strict time limits apply.
