Three Union Members Recognized at State Capitol During DHHS Annual Awards

Three NAPE/AFSCME members who work for the Department of Health and Human Services were recognized at the State Capitol in June for their outstanding service as part of the DHHS annual awards ceremony.

Jennifer VanLaningham, a Waiver Services Specialist in Omaha, won the “Positive and Constructive Attitude and Actions Award.” Jennifer was recognized for her exceptional positivity and compassion, and helping others find the good in challenging moments. She lifts the spirits of her teammates through humor, encouragement, and genuine care. Whether she is supporting a client with empathy or taking quick action to fill a client’s need, Jennifer leads with kindness, joy, and a strong sense of doing what’s right.

Avery Hulse, a Program Specialist from Lincoln, was the runner-up for the “High Personal Standard of Integrity Award.” Avery was recognized for her strong personal integrity, dedication, and rapid impact since joining the Policy and Waiver team. Her role in initiatives of the division, such as the elimination of the developmental disabilities waitlist, highlights her ability to take on complex challenges with determination, honesty, and professionalism. Avery’s eagerness to learn, her openness to ask questions, and her drive to excel make her a standout team member and rising leader.

Terra Meyer, a Social Services Supervisor from Hastings, was the runner-up for the “Openness to New Learning Award.” Terra was recognized for demonstrating a deep commitment to personal and team growth by actively seeking new learning opportunities and sharing knowledge with others. She fosters a workplace culture of curiosity and collaboration. Terra has invested in her professional growth by completing the RISE program and has put her learning into action by facilitating more effective and collaborative team huddles. Terra’s openness to shifting perspectives and challenging the status quo makes her a true champion of continuous improvement.
