When NAPE/AFSCME member Ryan O’Grady, an Office Technician at the Lincoln Regional Center, realized his shift differential was not being applied to his paychecks, he knew something wasn’t right. After reaching out to payroll to have it corrected with no success, Ryan reached out to his union representative.
“I was entitled to a $0.60 shift differential for working overnights. It had been missing from my paychecks for 6 months,” Ryan said. “After reaching out repeatedly to payroll to have the mistake corrected, the shift differential still wasn’t there. That’s when I started talking to my union rep.”
Our labor contract specifies that members working more than 50% of their shift between 6:00 pm to 6:00 am receive a shift differential of sixty cents per hour for all hours worked on that shift. After not receiving his shift differential for months, Ryan was entitled to backpay to correct the inaccurate compensation.
Once Ryan contacted his union representative, a grievance was filed on his behalf. Ryan prevailed and received the backpay he was owed.
“As an employee, you need to make sure you are getting fairly compensated for the work you do,” Ryan said. “Reach out to the union if you start noticing mistakes on your paystubs to make sure things get taken care of. Mistakes happen, but if the State isn’t working then people can’t be served.”
