Commission for Blind & Visually Impaired Members Unite for a Strong Voice

More and more agencies across the state have surpassed majority union membership, which means more power at the bargaining table this fall. NAPE/AFSCME members at the Nebraska Commission for the Blind and Visually Impaired (NCBVI) are proud to have recently surpassed majority membership.

“Surpassing majority union membership at NCBVI is a significant milestone and a powerful statement from our employees that we believe in standing together. During uncertain and unpredictable times in state government, having a strong union like NAPE/AFSCME advocating for us is more important than ever.” said NAPE/AFSCME member Jason Baker (NCBVI, Kearney).

NAPE/AFSCME members at NCBVI take pride not only in the services they provide to our fellow Nebraskans who are blind and visually impaired, but in their union involvement as well. Nancy Coffman has been a NAPE/AFSCME member for over three decades, and has worked for NCBVI for almost forty years. “If we didn’t have a union, we wouldn’t have the benefits and pay we currently do,” Nancy said.

“Our staff members want a voice in protecting our careers, benefits, fair pay, workplace stability, and the services we provide to Nebraskans who are blind or visually impaired. Surpassing majority membership demonstrates that NCBVI employees support strong collective bargaining rights and recognize the value of unity, advocacy, and having experienced representation at the bargaining table.” Jason said.
