NAPE/AFSCME members gathered in Scottsbluff for our latest Leadership Training in August. First time attendees participated in our initial steward training curriculum to learn how to represent, organize, communicate with, and lead fellow state employees at their worksites.
Returning members refreshed their skills like representing members in pre-disciplinary meetings and identifying contract violations. They also reviewed our rights under the Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA), Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), during performance evaluations, and during a potential layoff.
Grace Garza, a Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor with the Nebraska Commission for the Blind and Visually Impaired (Scottsbluff) attended her first leadership training. “I’ve been interested in attending this training because I want to make sure I know our rights on the job, and so I can help give my fellow members a voice,” Grace said.
Nathan Logue, a Highway Maintenance Crew Chief for the Nebraska Department of Transportation (Gering) returned to leadership training to sharpen his skills. “I learned so much during my first training, I wanted to come back to learn more,” Nathan said. “A lot of the guys on the crew don’t know their rights, and we need to make sure we have a strong voice on the job.”
Ashley Augustin, Veterans’ Service Officer for the Nebraska Department of Veterans’ Affairs, made the trip to Scottsbluff from Kearney. “I love traveling across the state to attend leadership training,” Ashley said. “I always learn new things, and I get to meet fellow members from all over Nebraska. That’s what helps grow and strengthen our union.”
Our next NAPE/AFSCME leadership training will be held in Lincoln on November 14 & 15. The course is open to all union members. Click here to sign up. We will provide meals during the training, and a hotel room for members traveling from outside Lincoln. We hope to see you there!
