NAPE/AFSCME member Ashleigh Simpson has worked as a Staff Care Technician for the Department of Veterans’ Affairs (NDVA) for almost three years. When she heard of an opportunity to apply for a new position, she was excited to apply for the vacancy.
Under our contract, NDVA 24-hour facility employees have the right to ensure that the most senior employee receives an internal transfer if multiple qualified employees apply for the same position. However, that was not what happened to Ashleigh.
“I heard that they had offered the transfer to someone else, but I didn’t think that was right. I called my union rep to see what could be done about it,” Ashleigh said. Ashleigh’s coworker had less seniority and experience, but had been offered the transfer before Ashleigh could express interest.
Together, Ashleigh and her union rep filed a grievance and prevailed. Ashleigh received an internal transfer to the position she applied for.
“I was excited to hear that I was going to get the position I wanted. Being a union member means that someone is going to have my back and that my rights are protected. I’m glad I reached out to my union.” Ashleigh said.
