Union members who work for History Nebraska have united together to address workplace concerns. Recent membership growth at the agency has empowered employees to stand up for their rights. Multiple facilities and worksites across the state boast majority membership – and all of our members know that when they stand in solidarity with their colleagues, they can win.
Two Curators for History Nebraska Emma Reiner and Samantha McCarville, recently prevailed in grievances after their right to privacy in performance counseling was violated.
“We had been having issues with the contract not being followed and had brought it to this person’s attention multiple times, but when the behavior continued we knew we had to say something,” Samantha said. “The grievance process was easy and we were happy with the results because it was an acknowledgment that something was wrong and that we weren’t being treated with the respect we deserved.”
Emma said she was grateful for the work their union representative did to advocate for them throughout the process.
“Everything was explained really well and we knew what to expect going into it,” she said.
Emma and Samantha said they felt they had let the behavior go on for too long and wished they had contacted their union representative the first time something happened – but now that they have prevailed, they feel good about the steps they took to advocate for themselves.
“Our union is there to protect our rights and by speaking up about what was happening we both feel that we’re helping ensure that this doesn’t happen to someone else in the future,” Samantha said.
Members at History Nebraska know that many of their colleagues are fellow union members who have their back when their rights are violated at work. Together, we can continue to advocate for one another and win.
Our union continues to grow in record numbers. The more members we have, the stronger we are. If you’re not yet a union member, stand with your colleagues and join us today!
