Union members who attended our summer Leadership Training in Omaha in June sharpened their leadership skills and some became new union stewards. New stewards participated in contract training, learned about legal rights, how to represent coworkers, and how to grow union membership.
Returning stewards refreshed their contract training, practiced representing coworkers in pre-disciplinary meetings, learned about important legal rights regarding free speech, and prepared for contract negotiations.
“I came to Leadership Training to learn about what my rights are in the workplace, so that when I’m at work I can help others protect their rights,” said returning NAPE/AFSCME steward Tracy Epps a Behavioral Health Practitioner (DHHS, Omaha).
“I’ve spent a lot of time in the private sector, and I’ve gotten to experience a lot of the concerns that could be protected by a union. I wanted to get a public sector job because I knew about our union, I wanted to be a part of our union, and I wanted those protections so that my kids know what a good workplace looks like.” said newly trained steward Patrick McCarville (DAS, Lincoln).
NAPE/AFSCME Leadership Training Weekends are open to all union members. There are two more training weekends in 2026. Members can register for training by clicking here. NAPE/AFSCME will cover the cost of meals and hotel rooms for members traveling from out of town to attend training.
