More Than 1,300 New Members Joined NAPE/AFSCME in 2023

NAPE/AFSCME Local 61 saw record membership growth in 2023. In the past year, 1,383 new members joined our union. This record growth is due in large part to our dedicated union leaders and Volunteer Member Organizers (VMOs) who are passionate about strengthening our union.

“My favorite part of being a Volunteer Member Organizer is seeing a little lightbulb go off when potential members learn something new about how our union helps employees,” said Lisa Steiner, a Developmental Disabilities Service Coordinator at the Department of Health and Human Services.

Lisa is passionate about having conversations with her fellow State of Nebraska employees about how our union can have their back and enable them to make meaningful changes in their workplace. It’s VMOs like Lisa who have made NAPE/AFSCME’s year of record growth possible.

In August, NAPE/AFSCME launched our 3,000 Strong: United Together campaign in an effort to grow to 3,000 members by the time contract negotiations begin in September 2024. In doing so, we followed in the footsteps of our predecessors, who rallied behind a campaign called “3,000 Plus – Or Bust” in 1995. We know we can finish the fight and reach record high membership.

Union membership is at a 25-year high and we’re determined to keep growing. There’s an unmistakable link between the number of members we have and our power at the bargaining table.

If you’re not already a member, will you join us today and be a part of our push to 3,000 union members?
